Mansfield Schools approve two FY27 budgets ahead of town meeting vote

Mansfield School Committee approved two fiscal year 2027 budgets for town meeting consideration. The Committee voted unanimously to approve a balanced budget of $60,863,231 requiring $2.39 million in cuts and a 2.37 percent increase plan of $61,959,069 contingent on a $2 million override. Director of Finance Matthew Violette presented competing scenarios involving either 22 or 12 full-time equivalent reductions.
Public commenters and Committee members including Chair Jenn Walsh expressed concern about cumulative multi-year cuts and their impact on programming, class sizes, and teacher recruitment. The Committee also unanimously approved a $6,400 state grant for Mansfield High School's financial literacy initiative and advanced a new in-house position for visually impaired student support, previously contracted.
