Zoning Board approves three variances, denies accessory dwelling unit
Zoning Board of Appeals · Meeting of January 20, 2026
Mansfield Zoning Board approves three variances while debating new ADU rules. Chair Darlene Pruitt and the board voted unanimously to grant relief to homeowners William and Katrin Hawkins for expanding their 1930 colonial at 26 Shawmut Avenue and to John and Jennifer McPherson for a rear addition at 12 Old Elm Street accommodating elderly in-law care. The Currivan Family Living Trust won approval for a lot-width variance at 300 East Street to create two additional single-family lots.
However, the board voted 3-2 to deny accessory dwelling unit relief for Husam Karzoun at 137 Old Elm Street, with Pruitt and Edward Valanzola opposed. The denial reflected board concern about setting precedent for front-yard ADU placement under the newly adopted state-mandated bylaw; members noted an alternative compliant location existed on the property despite driveway modifications and yard loss.
