Emergency Water Main Break on Gilbert Street Forces Temporary Shutoff
An emergency water main break on Gilbert Street forced a temporary shutoff on what is already the town's most water-stressed stretch of summer, with Phase III mandatory restrictions now two weeks old and no relief in sight.
TOWN HALL
The town declared an emergency early Monday following a water main break on Gilbert Street, triggering a temporary shutoff for affected residents. No timeline for restoration was included in the initial alert; the town's online alert center at mansfieldma.com is the place to check for updates. Residents should also be prepared for possible discoloration or low pressure once service resumes, as is standard after a main break.
The emergency comes at an already difficult moment for the local water system. Mandatory Phase III outdoor water restrictions have been in force since June 10, the town's most stringent tier, limiting lawn and garden watering to specific days and times. Residents who have not yet reviewed the permitted schedule can find it on the town website.
On a more forward-looking note, the Industrial Development Commission, collaborating with the Select Board and Mansfield's State House delegation, has formally launched a Downtown Sign and Facade Improvement Program. The initiative is designed to upgrade the physical appearance of the downtown business corridor. Downtown property and business owners should watch for eligibility details from the IDC.
The June 2026 Town Newsletter is also now available online, with updates from departments, boards, and committees across town.
